The invisible burden young people carry every day

Alongside their school bags, students often carry invisible burdens "on their backs"

16%

of 16 and 17-year-olds experience mental challenges and they need professional support.

👨‍⚕️

A shortage of experts in the mental health of young people and limited access to free services make the situation harder.

👨‍⚕️

Young people do not recognize when they need help or are afraid to ask for it

By creating a stigma-free environment where young people feel safe to access the support system without fear of judgment, the likelihood that they will seek help and remain engaged in the care process increases. UNICEF is working to ensure sustainable government investment in creating a supportive environment for children, adolescents and their parents and caregivers.

  • Training and mentoring for 175 professionals in the field of mental health prevention and protection from the health, education, and social care sectors, who will provide support to young people to improve their mental health.
  • Professionals from the education, health, and social care sectors complete an accredited tenday training programme.
  • The training includes modules in the field of youth mental health, psychosocial interventions, family interventions, and intersectoral cooperation. After the training, professionals continue to receive mentoring and supervision, helping them apply their knowledge and provide effective support in everyday practice.

You are not bad, you are just feeling bad.

Young people are facing growing mental health challenges, while support in their communities often remains out of reach. As a result, many struggle without the support they need

Mental health conditions are a leading cause of death, illness and disability, especially among older adolescents. All children and adolescents, as well as their parents and caregivers, are affected by mental health challenges.

What is the UNICEF Friends Club?

The UNICEF Friends Club is made up of regular donors whose monthly contributions enable UNICEF to provide vital support for children both in emergencies and every day throughout the year, as part of its regular programme for children in Serbia.

How can I be sure my money is used properly?

UNICEF regularly publishes annual reports on its work and informs the public about the results achieved for children. Transparency is part of our identity. See our 2024 results in Serbia.
