“Nothing special” — it seems at first glance. An ordinary small sachet containing a therapeutic peanut-based paste that children can eat straight from the sachet.
But for a child suffering from severe malnutrition, this packet means life. It provides essential energy and nutrients in a packet with a long shelf life, giving children a second chance to survive and recover. That’s why we call this small packet — a Hope Packet.
Your donation helps UNICEF procure and deliver more of these life-saving packets to the children who need them most.
RUTF (Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Food) — a peanut-based paste that is rich in calories, protein, vitamins and minerals. It is used to treat severe malnutrition in children under the age of five. When eaten regularly over a period of six to eight weeks, RUTF can help a child gain weight, regain strength, and begin to recover from life-threatening malnutrition.

‘’They don’t sleep at night because they are hungry.’’ says Zahra, a mother from Sudan. Her eldest daughter, Farisha, is extremely weak – even the slightest movement is a struggle.
At a UNICEF supported nutrition centre, Zahra and her children received vital support and therapeutic food.

Conflict has forced families to flee their homes, essential services are unavailable, and communities are struggling to survive. In some parts of Sudan, famine has already been confirmed.
In crises like these, children are always among the hardest hit.
Children suffering from severe malnutrition become dangerously weak. Their immune system is compromised, making them more susceptible to infections and slowing their recovery from even mild and common illnesses. Parents are forced to watch their children lose weight and strength, knowing that without urgent help, they may not survive.
