At school, on the playground, at home – all children deserve support and a safe environment where they can thrive, develop their talents and pursue their dreams.
However, the reality is somewhat different. In today’s Serbia:
- Only 1 in 17 people is a child
- 225,600 children are at risk of poverty
- 5,260 children are growing up without parental care
- Around 60,000 preschool children have developmental difficulties and disabilities
- One in four schoolchildren feels unhappy once a week
- Almost a half of children aged 1 to 14 experience violent discipline at home
- Although 92% of Roma children start primary school, only 64% finish it
- Half of the girls from Roma settlements marries before turning 18 years of age
- 12% of children need additional learning support
- More than half of the most vulnerable children are functionally illiterate.
Behind these numbers are real children – a boy who dreams of becoming an engineer but lacks the basic conditions for learning, or a girl who loves math but needs extra support to develop her potential.
