World Children’s Day is marked on 20 November, the anniversary of the adoption of the Convention on the Rights of the Child. It brings together governments, organizations, schools, families, and communities around a shared goal: building a world where every child can grow up safely, healthily, and with dignity.

The Convention reminds us that every child has the right to be protected from violence, to go to school, to participate in decisions that affect them, and to access health care and support. No matter where they live, what language they speak, or the conditions in which they grow up, every child deserves the chance to reach their full potential.

Over the past decades, the world has made significant progress in realizing children’s rights. Children today are more likely than ever to survive, learn, and stay healthy. But many challenges remain: some children still grow up in poverty, face the impacts of climate change, navigate risks in the digital world, and experience pressures that affect their mental well-being.

That is why World Children’s Day is not only a moment to celebrate progress—it is a call to renew our commitment to building a society that places children at the heart of every decision and every plan.

Why is World Children’s Day celebrated?

World Children’s Day reminds us each year of a shared global promise: no child should be left behind. Wherever they live, every child has the right to a childhood that is safe, fulfilling, and full of opportunities for growth and development.

This idea is the foundation of the Convention on the Rights of the Child—a document that forever changed how the world views children and their rights. It reminds governments that every child has the right to grow up in a caring family environment, to go to school, to be healthy, and to have their voice heard and respected.

A world fit for every child begins with us

World Children’s Day promotes universal values: equality, solidarity, inclusion, and the importance of listening to children.
UNICEF’s message is simple: when we support children, we build a better world for everyone.

This day reminds adults to listen to children and involve them in discussions about issues that shape their future—from education and mental health to environmental protection and digital safety.

How is World Children’s Day marked in Serbia?

World Children’s Day is an opportunity to raise awareness of the importance of respecting children’s rights—and to highlight how every community can help children grow up safe, healthy, and supported.

Throughout the year, UNICEF works to improve the well-being of children in Serbia through programs in education, health and early childhood development, social protection, and youth participation.
In partnership with government institutions, local authorities, civil society, and the private sector, UNICEF develops solutions that ensure every child in Serbia has access to support and opportunities to learn, grow, and thrive in a safe, nurturing environment.

Special attention is dedicated to children living in poverty, children with disabilities, and children from Roma communities. When children are supported, society becomes more resilient, fair, and prepared for the future.

Schools and communities at the heart of the celebration

Schools and local communities across Serbia mark World Children’s Day in their own unique ways—through workshops, performances, debates, acts of solidarity, and creative events led by children themselves. Through these activities, children take the lead in promoting their rights, sharing what matters to them, and reminding adults how important it is to listen to their voices.

Whatever the form, the message is the same: children’s rights matter, and their voices must be heard.

The role of media and public figures

Media and public figures play a key role in raising awareness about children’s rights and helping build a society that respects and supports every child.

When well-known individuals join UNICEF, their support brings greater visibility to children’s rights and encourages the public to get involved.
Their voice matters—but the voice of children matters even more.
World Children’s Day exists to make that voice louder than ever.

How can everyone help protect children’s rights?

Protecting children’s rights begins in everyday life—in families, schools, communities, and the media. Children’s rights are not abstract; they come to life in every decision adults make that affects children, in how we speak to them, listen to them, and respond when their rights are at risk.

Raising awareness about children’s rights means creating environments where children grow up free from violence, discrimination, and fear—empowered to learn, express themselves, and participate in their communities.

Donations and support for UNICEF programmes

Thanks to the support of people and companies across Serbia, UNICEF implements programmes that change children’s lives—from early childhood development and education, to protection from violence and support for mental health.

Regular monthly donations ensure that these programmes reach the most vulnerable children.

By supporting UNICEF, you invest in lasting change and in a future where every child has equal opportunities to grow and succeed.

Donate today and help ensure that every child in Serbia has the chance for a safe and happy childhood.

A world fit for every child

Children’s rights do not live only in legal documents—they live in every decision we make, every conversation, and every opportunity we create for a child.

It is our responsibility to build a world where children are safe, supported, and included. A world where we listen to them, understand them, and learn from them.

When we invest in children, we invest in a future that is fairer and full of possibilities.

Together, we can build a world that works for every child.
